How Solar Pool Heating Works

Solar pool heating involves circulating pool water through solar collectors, which are typically mounted on the roof of a building. Energy from the sun heats the circulating pool water which returns to the pool at a higher temperature, heating the pool to a pre-set temperature.

Solar Pool Heating Operation

  • Set the desired pool water temperature on the solar controller.
  • The solar controller will automatically start the solar pump when there is adequate temperature difference between the roof sensor and pool sensor.
  • The pump will continue to run until the pool water reaches the pre-set temperature on the controller, providing there is solar gain.
  • The solar pump draws cold pool water and pumps it through the solar collector tubes on the roof.
  • The cold water from the pool is heated as it circulates through the solar absorber tubes.
  • The solar heated water returns to the pool at a raised temperature.
  • When the pool water reaches the desired temperature, the solar controller will turn off the pump and the water will drain out of the pool solar heating system. This water is replaced by air using the vacuum break valve to avoid the solar collector tubes being sucked flat.
